 Ursula Le Guin introduced the Ansible in her early science fiction novels. In her writings, the Ansible is an instantaneous, interplanetary communications device. By one report, it was first introduced in her Hainish novels. I know it was prominent in The Left Hand of Darkness.

Writing later, Orson Scott Card in his Enders Game series refers to the Ansible more as a universal network than just a singular communication device. In fact, the Ansible plays a prominent role in a multiple world society providing not only a communications medium, but an entire digital media employed for a wide range of personal and commercial applications. It includes discussion and individual publishing options and plays a prominent role as a vehicle for political action.

The Ansible - the Internet, cell phones, blogs, text messaging and podcasting rolled into one. The future of communication.
